Information about different high definition DVD Formats including Blu Ray and HD DVD!

There are currently two different formats available that will provide you the chance to enjoy movies in greater detail through your HD ready TV. HD-DVD and Blu Ray discs both offer a significant increase in the amount of data that they can store - from 4GB on a regular DVD up to 30GB on HD DVD and 50GB on a Blu Ray Disc. This tenfold increase in the amount of information means that you can have far more detail on the screen, higher quality sound (up to Dolby 7:1), and a range of additional special features to improve your viewing experience further such as additional documentaries. |
The downside of this new technology is that studios have been unable to adree which format they should support, and indeed which is better. Sony are championing their Blu Ray format, which will be included in the long awaited PlayStation 3 console, and this is likely to be the winning format if the consols shares the success of its predecessors. HD DVD is a cheaper format for producers, and HD DVD players will be able to read standard DVDs too, which is a major benefit and will stop people having to replace their entire library of discs.
If you want to buy a new HD DVD Player, you will need to decide which films you want to watch, as films released by warner will only be avalable on Blu Ray, while Dreamworks movies will find their way onto HD DVD. This confusion is likely to remain in place for a number of years until one of the two formats wins, although there is talk that a common interface will be available at some point so that the proponents of both systems will be able to save face rather than having a format that they have invested billions of dollars in developing turn into a costly failure.
